The Tangra region lies towards the east of Kolkata. The region
is about five kilometres from the city centre. The locality is
famous for its tanneries that are present in surplus here. The local
population is dominated by the East Asians who have settled here. It
is due to this very reason that the place is sometimes called as the
Chinatown of Kolkata. For Chinese community settled in the state and
beyond, there is no place better than Tangra.
The Tangra region has been undergoing rapid changes in the last few
decades. The traditional professions and values have been almost
abandoned and the township is fast pulling itself on the lies of
modernity. The statistics for the region reveal an increase in the
commercial and trade activities. Schools, Colleges and technical
institutes have multiplied many folds.
However health continues to be degrading among the local
population. The region faces serious problems due to pollution
caused by the excess of tannery units. It was in response to the
government orders that many tannery factories were shifted from
Tangra to Bantala after reviewing the health status in the region.
One other gift in Kolkata's Chinatown is the traditional Chinese
food. The restaurants in the region have for years served the
popular Chinese recipes. Some young entrepreneurs that have migrated
to other parts of India have earned a name for themselves and the
food which everyone relishes.
The region is connected with the roads to the rest of the city.
Buses, taxi's or auto-rickshaws are some service providers to reach
the place.
Accessibility
- Tangra lies east of Kolkata city center and separated by a
distance of about 5 kms. The Pulin Kartik Road connects the
region with that of Entali. There is a major link road in Entali
that provides access to other townships. One can as such avail
the opportunity by dropping at Entali and then hiring an auto
rickshaw to Tangra.
- The nearest railway station is the one at Belghata, not more
than a couple of kilometres.
- Behala Airport (domestic) lies to the north-west of Tangra
and is some 14 kms far from the place.
